Other Core Benefit Programs

The College provides an opportunity for you to protect a substantial portion of your income if you become disabled while employed at Ivy Tech by enrolling in the Group Long-Term Disability Insurance Plan (LTD). You share the premium cost of this protection with the College. Also, as an employee of Ivy Tech, you are covered by the Indiana State Worker's Compensation Act. This act ensures that you will continue to receive a certain amount of compensation if you are disabled as a result of a job-related injury.

Upon becoming a full-time, benefits-eligible employee, you have the option to enroll in the Ivy Tech LTD Plan. It provides a monthly income to you if you suffer a Total Disability resulting from an accident or illness. You and the College share the premium expense for this benefit based on your annual salary.



All full-time, benefits-eligible employees may apply for group long-term disability insurance. You are guaranteed coverage under Ivy Tech’s LTD plan if you apply for such coverage within 31 days of the date you became a full-time, benefits-eligible employee. If you do not apply within 31 days of becoming eligible and you wish to enroll in the LTD plan at a later date, you must submit a Statement of Health Form for consideration and approval by the insurance carrier. The insurance carrier may decline to extend coverage to late enrollees.



The College pays 100% of the premium expense for LTD coverage associated with the first $7,200 of your annual salary and 46.25% of the premium expense for LTD coverage related to your remaining annual salary. When you enroll in the plan, your regional Human Resources Administrator will inform you of the cost of your portion of the LTD premium expense.  Your share of the LTD premium expense is automatically deducted from your paycheck on an after-tax basis.

Qualifying for a Benefit


Benefit payments will begin on the first day of the month after 90 days of continuous total disability unless you are still receiving wages from the College. If you are still receiving wages, your disability benefits will be payable after the month in which you received your last wages.

Total Disability means that you:

  are continuously unable to perform the substantial duties of your normal occupation; and
  after benefits have been paid for 36 months, unable to perform the material and substantial duties of any gainful occupation for which you are reasonably suited by training, education or experience.
  LTD benefits will not be paid if your disability is caused by a self-inflicted injury, your commission of or attempt to commit a crime, or war. Also, you may not be eligible to receive a benefit if your disability is due to certain physical conditions which existed before you were covered by this Plan

Benefit Payments


The monthly LTD benefit is calculated as 60% of your base monthly wage not to exceed a benefit of $12,000 per month. Evidence of Insurability is required for a benefit between $12,000 and $15,000 per month. This amount is reduced by the amount of any other monthly benefits you may be receiving, such as Worker's Compensation or Social Security. 

During the first 12 months of disability, your monthly LTD benefit will not be reduced by income received from Ivy Tech unless, when combined with income from all other sources, including your monthly LTD benefit, the total exceeds 100% of your pre-disability earnings from Ivy Tech. After the first 12 months of disability, your monthly LTD benefit will be reduced by any earnings from the College and/or any other source so that your total income is no greater than 60% of your pre-disability income.

Survivor Benefit

  Under certain conditions, if you die while receiving disability income benefits under this group LTD plan, your beneficiary may be eligible to receive continuing payments. These payments would equal the monthly income benefit you received in the month you died, and could continue for up to six months after your death, if you had been totally disabled for at least twelve months

When Coverage Ends


Your coverage ends on:

    the date the group policy is terminated;
    the date you are no longer in a full-time, benefits-eligible position with the College;
    the last day for which any required employee contribution is made;
    the date you request termination of your group LTD insurance plan, in writing;
    the date your employment with Ivy Tech terminates; or
    the date you enter active military service for any country, except for temporary duty of 30 days or less.
