April 29, 2008 - A Wonderful Birthday

This blog will have to be short because I am real busy this week getting ready for graduation.  First let me say congratulations to all those who are graduating, and if you are graduating from the Warsaw or Elkhart campus I will see you next Friday.

Now for the great news Amy and I are now the proud parents of Trinity Renea Mitchell, she was born on my birthday April 17th at 4:05 p.m. at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.  She was 6lbs. 10oz. and 18 ¾ in.  Amy and Trinity are doing well and are both at home resting.  I try to spend as much free time as I can with them so Amy can get a break if needed.  Once the chaos that is graduation is over I will have a lot more free time for my family.  (Until summer school starts), If you wish to see pictures of Trinity she is on my myspace page.  Just look for the name Darryl Mitchell, I can’t remember what the actual address is; I will give it to you guys in my next blog and remember.

Shoot for the moon for if you miss you will be amongst the stars.

March 31, 2008 - The Storm is Over

Talks about crazy times, these past weeks have been.  First I was having problems with one of my classes where my work was saving but I could not reopen it, luckily I got that problem solved yesterday so now I get to play catch up.  I also just remembered that I am taking an internet course so I am weeks behind in that class, and I have a project that is due in a few weeks and I have yet to start it.  This is what I live for, I had a very severe case of senioritist, and I caught this same disease in high school.  It can be crippling if not handled correctly, but the good thing about senioritist is that once you have overcome the bug you get a second wind that is unbelievable.  So don’t worry I will be fine.

In other news Amy and I are doing great, she will be having the baby this month, and we will be setting the c-section date next week on Thursday.  The doctor said it will probably be either the 24th or 25th.  I can’t wait and I know Amy is extremely anxious to get her body back to herself.  We have decided to push the wedding back to 2009 so we can get ourselves better situated financially, but trust me when we get married it will be a big wedding.

My internship is going great with the Housing Authority here in South Bend.  I did my first 3 weeks in the Finance department, where I worked on bank reconciliation, general ledgers, journal entries and financial statements (If you’re not an accounting major this may sound like jibberish to you).  I am now working in the Human Resources department where I will help rewrite their process and procedures policies.  I am thoroughly enjoying myself at this internship and they may try to keep me on after I have completed my internship so keep your fingers crossed.

Also in working news, I have decided to be the coach of Marshall Intermediate Center Boys’ Track Team.  I have some real potential stars on my team and I am looking forward to the challenge to earning these boys respect and to teach them meaning of hard work, dedication and team unity.

Finally graduation is right around the corner, May 9th will be a day of history for my family as I will be the first in my family to graduate college, this is but a mere stepping stone to my educational, and career goals and it will feel so good to see all my hard worked showcased on a piece of paper lol.  Seriously congratulations to all of those who will graduate this year and for those who are not graduating this May keep working hard and remember.

Shoot for the moon for if you miss you will be amongst the stars

February 28, 2008 -  If Life was Easy we all would enjoy it.

I know it has been a while since my last post and how hectic things have been for me lately.

First let’s start with the news that I know some people would like to know, Amy and I are having a baby girl (according to the ultrasound).  We have decided to name her Trinity Renee, the baby weighs three lbs. right now and Amy and are both anxious for her to get her, but for different reasons.  Amy is tired of the awkwardness of this pregnancy and I just want for Amy to start feeling better.

School is going ok so far: It’s real hard trying to go to school and maintain good grades, handle all of my student clubs, I’m about to begin my internship, and I’m starting my own business.  Business is going good so far but I think I may have started it a little too early, given my schedule and all.  My day typically starts with a 5 a.m. wake up and usually ends around 1-2 in the morning.  Amy is worried about me because of my lack of rest but I have a family to support and I will not have my family struggle like I did.

In other news, one week ago I went to Indianapolis with the Student Leadership Academy and we visited some of our state legislature and we also got a chance to meet Governor Mitch Daniels and I must say he is a lot balder in life than he is on T.V. LOL.  Seriously though we talked about some good topics, such as gun control and higher education as well as the economy, we ate lunch with legislature and I was able to sneak off and get a one on one with the secretary of state.  It was a great trip and I recommend that any student who will be at Ivy Tech next year to join their SLA you will earn so much.

I apologize for having to cut this blog short but I have been asked to speak to some high school student in the area about college life.  So I will try to get to you again soon.  And to my buddy in the business office and you know who you are.  I apologize for not getting this blog out sooner, I will do my best to stay on top of things.

As always,

Shoot for the moon for if you miss you will be amongst the stars.

February 12, 2008 - Life is Good!
First let me start with the great news.  Amy and I am officially a couple again and I couldn’t be happier.  Our time apart was hard but it was definitely needed, we now have a new found love and respect for each other that I feel will never be broken.  Also on Monday February 18th Amy will be getting another Ultrasound and hopefully we will find out the sex of the baby so we can start buying some things.  I can’t wait.

As for my internship I had an interview today with the housing authority here in South Bend and it went very well even though I showed up late for my interview (thanks dad).  They will have me working in many different departments from finance to HR to after school programs.  I am really looking forward to starting this position as an administrative assistant and hopefully this will lead to a permanent position with the housing authority.

My classes are going ok I guess, I have been so busy lately trying to get an internship and starting my own business that I have fallen a bit behind but I will catch up and still graduate with both degrees as expected ha ha, but seriously this semester is very difficult and I am struggling a bit but I know that I can either watch things happen or make them happen.

My business venture is going very well I must say.  I am starting to get my name out there and my customers are in love with my product.  I have to admit I didn’t expect for it to start this well but I am not complaining one bit, it’s nice to make money lol.

Well I hope all is well with you, remember to keep those e-mail’s coming I love answering them and remember

Shoot for the moon for if you miss you will be amongst the stars

January 25, 2008   Things are looking up!

First let’s start with the great news Amy and I are beginning to rekindle our relationship and we are looking forward to being together again in the near future.  We just both have some things we need to get straight in our personal lives before we can dedicate ourselves to one another completely.  Also the baby is doing fine and we still do not know what the sex of the baby is but as soon as I know you will.

I started my internship and as for now its ok, I’m not sure if I will stay with this company after my intern hours are over only time will tell that tale.

I started my own little personal business selling scented oils, I carry a lot of top name brand fragrances and each fragrance also has other items that you can get as well such as body wash, shampoo, bath salts, incense sticks, and more.  For more info and prices e-mail me at mitchellinc07@yahoo.com.  Sorry for the shameless plug but my kids have to eat too lol.

Classes have started and must say I have already fallen behind but like always I will catch up so don’t worry about me.  It’s just that between working on campus in the library and as a tutor, while doing an internship, taking 4 classes besides my internship, playing a role in 6 student organizations and starting my own little business is a bit overwhelming and probably too much for me but we will see.  I know this will be my hardest semester but it will also be my best semester.  I have to aim high if I plan to become something in this world, my name will be known one day and that is because I.

Shoot for the moon and if I miss I will be amongst the stars.

By the way to my readers I want to thank those who have sent me e-mails I love hearing from my readers and I respond to all of them personally and with a smile.  I want to thank you for supporting me and letting me know that my hard work does not go unappreciated.

Thank you and I will talk to you again soon.

January 10, 2008
A Wild and Heartbreaking Holiday Season

Well let’s start with the bad news my youngest daughter Vanessa has just moved to Indianapolis with her mom so seeing her is going to be so much harder, she moved on January 5th and I miss her already, then to make matters worse.  The very next day my fiancé and I separated and are no longer seeing each other as far as a relationship, of course I am going to stay in major contact with her because she is carrying my child and deep inside I can honestly say I still love her.   I’m not going to go into details about what happened because one it is too painful and to that is a bit too personal sorry.

Well enough of the bad news, my Christmas was good I spent time with my kids and my grandparents surprised us and came in from Chicago.  I miss them so much.  New Years was ok, I went to a church program and the singing was fairly good, then Amy her daughter, her little cousin and I went to the pastor’s house for a New Years dinner, after the dinner I went to my brother’s house and partied with them till about 4 in the morning.

Now I’m preparing for my final semester here at Ivy Tech, I am taking 5 classes plus working an internship at an Accounting firm here in South Bend.  I have been training for the last few weeks getting ready for this tax season.  There was a layoff at Conway for 60 days so that will help me get into the swing of things for this semester before I go back to working late evenings.  I’m sorry I don’t really have more to talk about but this holiday season I spent most of my days relaxing and doing nothing preparing myself mentally and physically for what is about to come in what I see as the hardest semester I have yet to have here at Ivy Tech wish me luck and I will talk to you all again soon and remember.

Shoot for the moon for if you miss you are amongst the stars.

November 30, 2007

I hope everyone had a good thanksgiving, mine went very well.  I met some members of my future family this holiday and I hope to get a chance to meet more of them before the holidays are over.  I ate entirely too much but I guess that is what you are suppose to do this time of year.  Now it’s Christmas time and I promised myself this year that I would not go crazy on the spending,  I have set a budget and I’m sticking to it.

My fiancé had an ultrasound this past Wednesday, the baby is doing great but we could not find out what the sex was due to the baby closing its legs tight as a snare drum.  The wedding plans are going good, all we have left is to see about a reception hall but we have to wait until the beginning of the year to check on those.

My son turned 6 on November 10th and my daughter will be 8 on December 10th.  I’m taking them to Chucky Cheese this weekend to celebrate; we are going to have a blast.

Things are going very well for me right now, I was just notified that I will receive a promotion at the trucking company that I work for as soon as another position opens and I also have an interview for an internship this Monday with an Accounting and Tax service firm.  I’m really hoping that I get this internship because it also pays and there is a possibility for future employment.  My kids are well, my family is well all and all I can’t complain about too much right now.

I hope everyone is doing well with their classes. We are getting down to the nitty gritty and for those who procrastinate like myself time is running out lol.  I hope you all have a good holiday season and I can’t wait to talk to you again soon and give you the latest updates in the life of D. Mitchell

As always shoot for the moon for if you miss you will be amongst the stars.  Happy Holidays.

November 8, 2007 - Life is a Traffic Jam

So much to do and so little time, I hope everyone is having an easier time than I am right now.  I finally understand that I had too much on my plate so I decided to feed some to the dog under the table lol.

I started a new job with Conway Freight, loading and unloading trucks.  I decided to stop tutoring for this semester.  Students were taking my kindness for weakness and kept trying to get me to tutor them while I was working in the library.  In the words of Stephanie Tanner “How Rude!!!” (Full House for those who don’t know).  My classes are starting to get a bit rough, it’s getting to the point of papers and projects and preparation for the final exams.  I have 5 so I have to get on the ball, I’m not really worried I just know that I am going to have a few rough weeks ahead of me.

In other news, the baby is doing fine.  I’m hoping that we will be able to get an Ultrasound done in the next month or two.  Also me fiancé and I had to push our wedding date back a few weeks because of reception halls.  We have decided on a reception hall but the down payment is a bit steep right now.  I will have to some how work my magic to pull this off.  So for those who are wondering I will take donationsJ.  Seriously though, I know God has a plan for me and my beloved so I will let him work it out for us.

I’m looking forward to this weekend, I will have my kids and my son Darryl Jr. turns 6 on Saturday.  I think I am going to take him to the movies and bake him a cake.  I’m not sure what to get him yet, we may just go toy shopping or something.

Finally this Sunday will be the day that Alpha Phi Omega gets inaugurated and we begin our pledging process.  This has been a long work in the making and Brother House and I will finally see the benefits of our work and dedication this Sunday.

Till next time shoot for the moon for if you miss you will be amongst the stars.

October 26, 2007

I hope everyone is doing well in their classes this semester, I’m having a bit of a rough semester and I’m not pulling the grades that I necessarily want but B’s are ok too.  I just finished one of my 8 week courses, which helps me out quite a bit (freeing up my Thursday evenings).

I don’t have any updates on the baby yet, we will be going to the doctor on Monday and we are supposed to be able to hear the heartbeat at this visit, I can’t wait.  My engagement is going very well, my fiancé is still on a hiatus from the wedding plan but I am still at it full force.  Honestly though, I will be taking a break soon due to the fact that I was just offered a position at Con Way Freight as a truck loader.  It’s not my dream job but it will get me into the door of a replicable company and from there who knows.  This will also give me some extra money to have the type of wedding that we want.  The reception itself will run over $10,000 (Getting married is expensive).

As for Halloween, here at Ivy Tech South Bend we are having a family night in which the Ivy Tech family is invited to watch Shrek the Third on Tuesday Oct. 30 and I’m trying to show Halloween 2007 on Wednesday Oct. 31.

My life at Ivy Tech is going well.  I made a tough decision and decided to leave the Student Government.  I just have too much on my plate right now and it was becoming a bit overwhelming, not to mention with the new job I will need as much rest as I can get.  My other organizations are doing well. Alpha Phi Omega will have its celebration ceremony in November in recognition of our chapter beginning its pledge portion of APO.  The Black Student Union has begun with its mentoring and read to a child program in association with the South Bend Community School Corporation.  Phi Theta Kappa will be helping the Center for the Homeless with a stuff-a-bus program in association with Martin’s Supermarket and the Fitness & Wellness Club has a big project that we are trying to get underway and honestly I could use some assistance from the Ivy Tech Community.

The Fitness & Wellness Club wants to do a New Year’s Resolution Weight Loss Competition.   The program is just getting underway and I want to try to make this a big deal.  I’m looking to get some sponsors to help out as far as assistance with the program and prizes to winning teams.  What I need is ideas and assistance from anyone who is willing to help by either giving ideas as to what kind of prizes and or organizations I should attempt to contact and also I would like for this program to reach out to other Ivy Tech Communities on all of our campuses.  If we are to be successful we must pool all of our resources, and perhaps we could make this an annual event and perhaps open this even up to the community.  So if you are in any ways interested or have any ideas as to how I can make this a success, please e-mail me.

As always shoot for the moon for if you miss you will be amongst the stars.  Happy Halloween

October 12, 2007

Let me give you the breakdown on a fabulous week from a day to day snapshot.

Monday: I bought my fiancé her engagement ring, I had it sized that day and proposed to her that evening, and this is how I did it. My original plan was to take her out to dinner at a nice restaurant but as most of my readers know my fiancé is pregnant and she couldn’t hold anything down. So I bought her a vase of roses and placed the ring in one of the roses. To make a long story short she was very ecstatic to have her ring.

Tuesday: To celebrate our engagement we decided to go out to the movies (she was feeling much better) I learned that either my new son or daughter loves jalapeño peppers. We went to go see “Good Luck Chuck” the movie was hilarious to us and I do recommend it. Warning there is nudity and strong sexual behavior and language definitely not a family movie. After the movie my baby and I just spent some time together.

Wednesday: This day was the best day of my coaching life. I coach an intermediate school football team here in South Bend called the Marshall Mustangs. Last year my team went 2-7 and was ranked number 7 out of 9 schools. This Wednesday my boys won the City Championship for the first time in their school’s history and went undefeated 5-0-1, I’m so proud of my boys especially all of the eighth graders who played for me last year.

Thursday: I was informed that this Saturday a journey that my fraternity brother and I joined on together this summer is finally about to come to pass. We decided to try and get a chapter of Alpha Phi Omega here at Ivy Tech South Bend. We worked real hard and stayed dedicated to the goal at hand, and this Saturday Oct. 13th our organization will be in the pledge status and by New Years we should have our official charter.

Friday: Today I have a meeting with two members from the South Bend community School Corporation to help two of my student organizations get started with a read to a child program and a tutoring/mentoring program. Also what I’m trying to do with the Fitness & Wellness Club is start a Biggest Loser competition. I’m trying to make this a real big event (possibly state wide). I plan on having the event start on New Year’s as a competition and as a incentive to help people lose weight as part of their New Year’s resolution.

Well that is all that I have in the life of me right now lol. Just remember shoot for the moon so if you miss you will be amongst the stars.

September 27, 2007

The past few weeks have been quite hectic if I may say.  My fiancé and I have decided to push our wedding date back to July for several reasons.  The main one being finances with a hectic school schedule running a close second.  I’m actually pretty excited about waiting because now I can do this wedding the way I would like to do it.

School has been a rollercoaster ride for me; some of my organizations are taking off while others are still grounded due to technical difficulties (lol).  We had a bowling night this past Monday at strikes and spares and there was an amazing turnout.  We had over 200 people bring their families to enjoy a night of bowling, black light miniature golf and free pizza and pop.  I was excited as to how things went and we are planning future events like that one.

I am continuously making new friends and meeting new people at Ivy Tech and to be honest it is a bit overwhelming.  To have so many people know your name and all you can do is remember their face.  I’m not great with names but I’m trying to get better at it.  Between classes, my student organizations, tutoring and work study I would say that on average I spend about 10-13 hours a day at Ivy Tech.  I was always taught that you can work hard now and play later or vice versa.

Finally the baby is doing ok, I went to the first doctor’s visit with my fiancé and since it is so early in the pregnancy it really wasn’t that eventful.  The doctor said that at the next visit we will be able to hear the heartbeat.  I’m just waiting for the ultrasound so I can hopefully find out if it’s a boy or girl.  Please let it be a boy.  Well that is all that I have for today, again I was rushed because I keep losing track of time and I have to send these out quick.

Remember; shoot for the moon so if you miss you will be amongst the stars.

September 14, 2007

These past few weeks have been a bit hectic.  I have had 5 student activity meetings in the last two weeks but we are making progress.  As I am typing right now I am also preparing for my 6th meeting which is for Alpha Phi Omega (A co-ed service fraternity) that we are starting on the South Bend Campus.  Classes are going ok, it’s a little hard to keep up with all 6 but I am doing ok (for now).  I feel like a chicken with its head cut off but honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I hate not being busy.

My fiancé is doing fine and the baby is good, Amy (my fiancée) has an appointment this Monday and yes I will be there.  I am going to try to make every appointment that I possibly can, it’s just hard between classes and my other extra curricula’s.  I’m also trying to get my wedding list together, it’s not easy planning a wedding in a few months but I’m not worried I’m great at multi-tasking.

I’m looking forward to this weekend, I’m getting my three kids and if weather permits I plan on having a picnic at the park, and possibly going to see a movie.  Sunday we will go to church and then they will go spend time with their little cousins.  Every Sunday my brothers and I get together and watch football and just reflect on the past week and relax.  It’s good to have a tight knit family.

Well that I guess is a brief synopsis of my past few weeks, I promise to have more details as to how things are going but I am writing this on the fly because I still have to tutor 3 students before the APO meeting at 11:30.  Then I have to go coach my football team which by the way their record is 1-0-1.  They tied their first game 16 – 16 and won this past Wednesday 30 – 8.  We have only 3 games left until the championship game and I think we have a real good shot of playing for the city championship.  After practice I will get my kids and begin a fun-filled weekend.

So until next time, keep shooting for the moon so if you miss you will be amongst the stars.

August 31, 2007

A little about myself, I was born in Chicago Illinois and I moved to South Bend when I was 12.  I am a graduate from Clay High School where I played two sports Tack & Field (Shot Put) and Football (Defensive Tackle). I was the guy that all the girls used as a shoulder to cry on and tell about their life/man troubles but I never got the girl (yeah poor me right).  I graduated in 1998 and was married with my first child by June of 2000.  I was separated with 2 children by October of 2002 and divorced in 2003.  I then met a woman that I thought was the love of my life but I was wrong and by July of 2005 I was again alone and now had 3 children.  I have made some bad decisions in my life but I must say that I have learned from my mistakes.  Those who do not learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them.

Today is a new day for me and honestly Ivy Tech has completely turned my life around.  I am graduating this year with my Associates of Applied Science in Accounting.  I am a member of 5 different student organizations and I hold office in all of them.

President of the Student Government Association

President of the Black Student Union

President of the Fitness & Wellness Club

Vice President of Phi Theta Kappa

Vice President of Alpha Phi Omega

I tutor 5 different subjects on campus

I’m now a campus blogger and a statewide blogger

And I will be joining the Student Leadership Academy this year

I have also found the love of my life here on campus.  We are planning to get married by years’ end and we have a baby on the way due May 2nd.  So I can honestly say that Ivy tech has been the turning point in my life and I thank this college for that.  That is one of the reasons why I am trying to have my wedding reception here on the South Bend Campus in the Cyber Café.  I will keep you informed as to how that idea turns out, as well as all of my other endeavors.

Till we talk again keep shooting for the moon for if you miss you will be amongst the stars.
